So in our parish, we do full inclusion. That means I see all my language kids in the regular classroom, usually in ELA. NO language pull-out groups! As therapists we really have to think outside the box to come up with activities and lessons that will address their language goals in the regular classroom setting.
Last week, my 4th grade language kids were working on poetry. So you know what that means...figurative language. Ugh! My kids can barely understand concrete language, muchless something abstract. When you are in 4th grade and a concept is way over your head, it is really difficult to be motivated to learn said concept.
With that in mind, I tried to come up with something that would make my kids a little more excited to understand figurative language. Have you ever played Drop the Chicken on your iPad or iPhone? It's so completely addicting. And the kids love it too! Merge together Drop the Chicken and Poetry...and voila! Figurative language lesson and game chicken style! Check it out...
Here is the FREEBIE lesson to teach this skill to your kiddos. It comes with kid-friendly definitions, examples, and visuals.
You can save it in iBooks and view it as an ebook, display it on your regular computer or projector, or even print it out to make cards or mini books for the kids to take. This made it very easy for me to take and modify for the classroom setting.
And here is the FREEBIE game that goes along with it.
The chicken cards target similes and metaphors.
The bug cards target personification and hyperboles.
And the balloon cards target alliteration, idioms, and onomatopoeia.
Both the lesson and game are ready and available at my TPT store along with several other fun speechie activities.
Enjoy!!
These are terrific! I love the graphics that you used. Thanks so much for sharing! :)
