Product Review: Language Difference vs. Disorder

As some of you may know, I deal with bilingual kids in my district on a regular basis.  I'm the "resident spanish therapist" for the parish and am involved in most, if not all, Spanish speech therapy cases.  Because I am frequently assessing bilingual kids, I jumped at the chance to grab Tatyana's Language Difference vs. Language Disorder when she asked me to review one of her products.

This 113 page packet is jammed packed with content on how to assess and intervene with bilingual children.   The focus of the material is to provide evidence for your EBP when dealing with ELL kiddos.  It will also give you some recommendations on how to intervene.

This packet is a great way to learn some good research-based information on bilingual language development and language differences and disorders.  You can also teach yourself assessment and therapy strategies.

Some of the objectives include:

  • Describe the sequence of typical bilingual development
  • Explain the process of second language acquisition in children
  • Contrast communication differences vs. disorders in bilingual children
  • Discuss research driven evidence based practices in assessment of bilingual children
  • Demonstrate potential limitations of standardized testing
  • Explain concerns about reporting standard scores
  • Illustrate how to use alternative methods of assessment to avoid bias
  • Describe research driven practices in treatment of bilingual kids with confirmed language disorders.
Tatyana thoroughly explains normal bilingual language development and acquisition.

She also gives evidence based intervention approaches.

I saved this pdf power point on my iPad in iBooks.  That way I can refer to it whenever I need.  It's a great resource to have on hand, especially when prepping for team meetings involving bilingual cases.

Tatyana blogs over at Smart Speech Therapy.  Check out her information:

Today, Tatyana is actually reviewing my Common Core RtI Pack for K-2.  You can check out her review here!

We decided to do a Rafflecopter giveaway of each of our products on our blogs!  So enter below to win a copy of my Common Core RtI Assessment Pack and head over to her blog to enter for a chance to win Language Difference vs. Language Disorder: Assessment and Intervention Strategies for SLPs Working with Bilingual Children.

Say What? Product Review & {GIVEAWAY}!!

I think every single one of my 2-5th grade inclusion kiddos are working on comprehension this year.  It seems like a hallmark sign of a language learning disorder.  Some of my kids can even read beautifully, decoding long words and everything.  When you ask them about what they've read or try to get them to retell the story, they break down completely.

When Kristin over at [simply speech] asked if I wanted to review one of her products, I immediately jumped at the chance to grab her Say What? pack!  I love it because it's simple and straightforward, targeting exactly what I need.  Check out Say What? and Say What? Part II!

The first edition of this activity comes with posters that explain story elements and terms and include visuals.

I actually printed out multiple sheets per page and use them as large cards.  This works better for me when I do inclusion or push-in sessions.

Also included are 24 mini stories with multiple comprehension questions for each.  Most of the questions focus on the story elements, including problem and solution and predicting.

These are great to whip out and gather some data or to reinforce skills they are learning in class!

Now let's check out Part II.  It is a super cute packet as well!

This activity includes a game board and 24 target cards.

These cards address story elements PLUS author's purpose, fiction/nonfiction, feelings, and sequencing.  It's a little higher level than the first pack.

I highly recommend grabbing BOTH packets!  They each come with several unique aspects that you'll want to be able to mix and match.  Grab the Say What? pack at Kristin's TPT store HERE and the Part II pack HERE!

Also, I'm SO excited to be able to offer a giveaway of these goodies!  [simply speech] has generously offered to give a copy of Say What? and Say What? II to 2 lucky winners.  So, one person will win the first edition and another person will win the second edition.  :)  Enter in the rafflecopter below!!  Good luck!  I'll choose a winner on Friday! :)

Tangled Tuesday

I'm excited to be teaming up with Amy from Major Speech Pathology Fun by a Minor Girl today!  She is reviewing one of my products over at her blog, so you can sneak on over and check out which one.  :)  Today I am reviewing her Language Envelopes Activity!  It's jammed packed with games and activities for several different areas of language.  Plus, it's geared toward your 2nd-6th graders, so it's appropriate for your older elementary kiddos.  Check it!
Each language activity comes with a title page that includes directions to play (most have several different playing options!), front-facing envelopes, back-facing envelopes, and stamps.  In general, students can receive a stamp if they answer correctly and sort the stamps onto little mailboxes.  Now let's check out each activity that's included.
  • First up, Envelope Categories.  Students match the words on the envelopes to the correct category.  She includes 4 different ideas to play.

  • Envelope Yes/No Questions:  Students respond appropriately to the question given on the card.  This game can be played expressively by answering the questions aloud.  It can also be played receptively by sorting the cards onto the enclosed yes/no envelopes.
  • Envelope WH Questions: Students match the questions to the responses (my favorite way to work on questions).  It contains stimulus cards for who, what, when, and where questions.  You can also sort the cards into the different question types and play using an enclosed game board.

  • Envelope Multiple Meaning Words: Included are 4 options to play.  Students can use the sentence and word cards to match the vocabulary word with the appropriate sentences.  They can also use the definition and instruction cards to match the words and definitions.  It can also be played expressively using just the instruction cards or definition cards.
  • Envelope Synonyms: Students can draw a sentence card and find the envelope that contains the correct words to fill the blank.  You could also just use the word cards and have students come up with their own sentences.
  • Envelope Antonyms: Each envelope contains 4 words.  Students must correctly identify the antonym pair.  If they respond correctly, they can put their envelope onto their mailbox.
Isn't this a cute activity?  It's a great way to work on vocabulary and allows for you to target multiple goals with the same group of kids.

You can check out Amy at her blog HERE or her TPT store HERE.  You can also like her on Facebook through her blog.
