Chick Artic Memory with a Freebie!

Do your kids like to play memory matching games?  Mine sure do.  Whether playing with vocabulary cards or articulation cards, memory is a classic game that goes a long way.  I do like to spice things up a little, instead of just playing the regular old matching.  Here are a few ways to change things up:

  • Let the kids go fishing for the cards.  Attach paper clips to each card and a magnet to a stick with a string.
  • Pick up the cards with a magnet wand.  Attach the paper clips, so they'll stick.
  • Hide the cards in a large sensory bin.  Mine is filled with red beans and rice (Louisiana shout out!).  ;)  The kids love digging around in the bin, especially the little ones.
  • Spread different sets of cards out on the floor for each student.  Let the kids race to see who can find all of their matches first.
  • Everything is more fun with wild cards!  Turn your instruction card into a wild card and change the rules up (i.e. whoever finds the wild card wins, loses a turn, puts a card back, etc.).  I put a sticker over my instruction card to make it more fun.
My new download is super cute and chickie themed!  It's made to be played like memory, so it's a great opportunity to try some of these new ways to play.  :)  Check it!

I just can't get enough of these cute Easter chicks.  :)  It'd also be a fun activity to play after reading There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick.

There are 18 pairs of cards for each sound (36 card in all).  The pairs that match contain the same chick picture but different target words.  I wanted to give my students more of a variety of words.  The target sounds include: /prevocalic r, vocalic r, s, l, k, f, sh, ch/.

And of course I added several wild cards to throw into the mix!

Aren't they adorable?  You can grab this packet at my TPT store HERE.  You can also snag the K set for free!!  Just click the download preview button on the TPT page to download the freebie.  :)

  10. Other ideas--put the cards in a target pattern on the wall and throw a beanbag to see which one to say. Use a laser light or flashlight (oriental trading has the cutest finger flashlights) to show which one to say (then remove from the field). For part of my Chick and Duckling (love that story!) unit I would have wind-up chicks make the choice when they stopped by a card. I love colored eggs-they can hold pictures or if the pics are too big, then a number to show which one to say. Once past spring the colored eggs became Milly the Many-colored Hens eggs so we could play all year round.
thanks again for sharing your creativity and hard work! i hope my ideas add to yours and other SLPs.
